How did you get involved in the cannabis industry?
I'm a media professional— from advertising to production, I've been lucky enough to be involved in a variety of campaigns for a range of clients. I founded 270M on the basis of working with luxury clients and saw an opportunity to expand our categories into cannabis. We still maintain a strong basis of clients outside of cannabis and choose to work with cannabrands who share missions similar to ours in elevating the conversation.
Personally, I believe in the healing abilities of cannabis as an alternative for a range of illnesses both physical and mental. I want(ed) to be involved in this industry from the start to contribute as much as possible towards the mission of deregulation and ultimately accessibility for all who choose to use the plant for health and wellness purposes.
Through applying my extensive experience in marketing and elevating luxury brands and products in the cannabis space, I launched New Highs CBD in Q1 of 2019.
Tell us a little bit about your product or service
With 270M's expanding reach in the cannabis space, the company launched the media brand Viride along with viridelife.com in 2017 to serve as a content hub for cannabis clients to connect with an affluent audience of consumers to market and sell products as well as expand brand awareness.
I created New Highs CBD because consumers expressed being disenchanted with the current terrain of cannabinoid wellness brands, so we hashed out a plan to elevate CBD hemp oils, not be a clone of products currently on the market. CBD's unique bouquet of benefits (from quelling hangovers to aiding sleep) deserves the high-quality cultivation, ingredients, and design we distill into each bottle. We use whole plant CBD that's grown and crafted in the United States, made from CBD-rich hemp with no herbicides, pesticides, or solvents. And, it does not contain ingredients such as fillers, additives, flavorings, or preservatives.
What time does your day typically start and what does a normal day look like to you?
Reasonably early, 7:30-8am and it's straight to diving in for the day. I don't consider myself to have normal days. All of our work for 270M is done remotely which allows mass flexibility in my day to day. I'll settle in at my home office if it's a heavy call day or I'll join team members around New York in interesting work spaces.
What is your vision for your company going forward?
270M will continue to position brands in the marketplace to their consumers through creative execution and media synergies and ensure inclusivity and education in the advertising world.
For New Highs I'm determined to showcase the way in which hemp based product can be an addition to our daily routines.
What would an ideal post prohibition society look like to you?
Inclusive with an opportunity for all who want a seat at the table.
What was your first experience with cannabis like?
It's very different than what a first experience in cannabis would look like now. When I first experienced cannabis, there were no options, the plant was frightening because of the stigma, and ultimately the illegal nature made the experience disenchanting.
Tell us about some of the challenges you face working in the cannabis industry
Limited opportunities in mainstream marketing initiatives, a lack of guidance in industry standards for product labeling, unexpected changes in regulation, and ultimately the fight for federal legalization.
What are some solutions you've found?
Setting the standard is in everything we produce as an agency for our clients. For example, if we are uncertain if our content will be flagged we develop a solution that eliminates the concern while still telling the brand story.
What is one thing you wish everyone knew about cannabis?
That it is simply a plant - and at its core, harmless. If people understood the simplicity of cannabis, I believe they would be accepting. Convoluted opinions, media, and the war on drugs has complicated something very natural.
What is one thing you wish everyone knew about your product or service?
That our mission both at 270M and New Highs is to continue to participate in conversations that will propel this industry forward and that we choose who we want to partner with to do that because those relationships are most coveted in moving the needle for our clients, ourselves, and the cannabis industry.
What is your favorite way to consume cannabis?
There are so many methods for consumption that are exciting and opening opportunities for novices to aficionados, but my favorite way to consumer is micro-dosing. I'm a big fan of Petra mints, OLO sublinguals, and Lowell quickies.
Concentrate or flower? Why?
Flower! Having cannabis straight from the earth is the most natural and spiritual way to enjoy the elegance of the plant. Flower is also communal from packing, passing, and sharing.
Do you think cannabis legalization will change the world for the better? Why?
Yes! Cannabis is a communal practice for many— it expands the mind, and has the ability to bring people from all walks of life together. Everyone could use a sense of community support these days. Cannabis as an industry will also open up an entire new sect of jobs, and not just for a certain level of educated individual but for those who want to work directly with the plant in farming to advanced technical and science based roles that help us research and discover to business and marketing professionals.
What advice would you offer to another woman who is looking to get into the industry?
Look, listen, explore with other women making waves in the industry. There are incredible women in this space who in other industries would be unreachable but in cannabis (right now) many of these leaders are willing to have a chat with you. Your goal should be to recognize your strengths and adapt them to opportunities in cannabis.
