Exploring Terpene Basics

By Leighana Martindale

Terpene (n.): Any of a large group of volatile unsaturated hydrocarbons found in the essential oils of plants, especially conifers and citrus trees.

We’ve been hearing a lot about terpenes lately, but what do they do? Terpenes are found in all different types of plants, including cannabis, and are what give each strain their distinct flavor and aroma. While terpenes don’t provide psychoactive effect, they do have effects on our body and vibe during the high.

Some cannabis researchers have made amazing discoveries in the cannabis industry, but unfortunately due to a lack of research we still have a lot to learn about the science behind terpenes and the effects of cannabis. This doesn’t mean we aren’t still learning a ton - check these articles by Green Leaf Labs and Steep Hill Labs OR click here to order your copy of The Her(B) Life Magazine Vol 02 which features a very in-depth article on terpenes to learn more about the science behind terpenes.

Most Common Terpenes

But for those of you who don’t know a lot about terpenes or want to learn more, here, we’ll go over the basic and most commonly found cannabis terpenes, their flavor, and effect.

Pinene

This is terpene is often found in pine needles and is known for its pungent and bright refreshing aroma. Pinene is interesting because this mixed with other other chemicals can create a reaction that forms still other terpenes. Limonene for instance is created from pinene. This terpene is known for its ability to help with breathing and lung expansion. It also has anti-inflammatory and pain relieving properties.

Strains high in Pinene:

  • Trainwreck

  • Dutch Treat

Limonene

This is possibly my favorite terpene. It is found in citrus peels and gives off a sweet citrus taste and aroma. Limonene is an antidepressant, helps boost the immune system, and has been shown to inhibit cancer growth along with many other properties. My favorite parts of limonene are the energetic and stress relieving effects. In my personal experience it has an uplifting and euphoric effect, I truly appreciate that about this terpene.

Strains high in Limonene:

  • Tangie

  • Super Lemon Haze

  • Orange Cookies

Myrcene

This is an extremely interesting terpene to me. It is found in mangos and is said to have highly sedative effects.  According to Steep Hill Lab, strains containing more that 0.5% Myrcene results in the ever so well known "couch lock" effect. Other than a sedative effect, this terpene is also known for its anti-inflammatory and pain relieving properties; as well as its ability to suppress muscle spasms.

  • Mango

  • Jack Herer

Linalool

Linalool is most commonly associated with lavender. It has a very sweet and floral aroma to it. With sedative and stress relieving properties its perfect for those who have a hard time sleeping or who face frequent anxiety.
