Walk into any of the four CAFE locations and you’d be surprised to find that, beyond the variety of cannabis products lining the shelves and happy customers being served, many of the people helping those patrons are women. What’s more: they’re women in leadership positions—managers, trainers, leaders in organizational development—striving to create a safe and welcome place for those in need of cannabis products.
In CAFE’s world, products and their distribution are just the tip of the iceberg. For this Toronto-run retailer, community, education, and responsible use are the forefront of their business, fueling their initiative to change the retail landscape for cannabis in Canada. With the inevitable growth of a brand new and thriving industry, the brand’s mandate also includes creating more higher up positions for women in the cannabis space. “We want women to feel like they have a straightforward, upwardly mobilized path toward success in this space,” says Amanda John, manager of the store’s Bloor St. location. “In my time here, I’ve felt as though being a woman was just another strength I brought to the table.”
Women and Their Relationship to Cannabis
There’s good reason for CAFE to be interested in supporting women’s success. For one, women are more likely than men to enjoy the purported painkilling effects of the cannabis plant. As well, 53% of women consume cannabis, compared to 42% of men. There are products sold at CAFE specifically made for women and their needs, so it makes sense that women need to be involved in the stocking, planning, marketing, and sales of such products.

Says Roxanne Pila of CAFE’s head office: “As individuals who know retail through and through, and cannabis retail at that, we knew our customers had to feel comfortable and well taken care of at every single CAFE location. Including women in the process wasn’t just non-negotiable, it was a complete no-brainer.”
CAFE prides itself on being a leader in innovation and trusted cannabis service. From providing the model for child-safety bags—of which became mandated by Health Canada after CAFE sparked the trend—to publishing literature on safe dosing and offering customer’s targeted recommendations, there’s no stopping what CAFE can and will do to create a better future for cannabis. Thankfully for all involved, that includes building a diverse staff prepared to serve the needs of any and every client that comes through their doors.
